Choosing A Novel Comparison Essay Topic: 10 Great Ideas


Writing a great novel comparison essay can be made much easier by first choosing a great topic idea. It can be hard to come up with some of your own, so we’ve come up with a list of 10 great ideas for you to use as your own for your comparison essay assignment:

  1. Compare Frank L. Baum’s Wizard of Oz stories with the film. How do the two appeal to contemporary audiences? And what elements were different as a result of being appropriate to the time in which they appeared?
  2. Compare and contrast “Youth of Age” by Samuel T. Coleridge and “Life Twilight” by Caroline Spencer. Consider imagery such as life and death in Spencer’s poem with that of Coleridge’s imagery of dreadful aging.
  3. Compare two novels of your choice by Hunter S. Thompson. He deals with many of the same themes throughout his works, but what evidence is there that demonstrates his development as a writer?
  4. Compare and contrast the film adaption of “Of Mice and Men” with that of the John Steinbeck’s 1937 novel of the same name. Does the film do the novel justice in the way it portrays farm life and work in the early 20th century?
